Obsidian Setup

(This article contains amazon affiliate links)

Today I pulled up a note, to get some information, and I was told my notetaking app was really well organized. I suppose that's true. I want to be able to find my notes, and I like it looking pretty. I'll go through how I've ended up organizing it, and what plugins I've added to my obsidian to make it work the way I want.

To investigate, we have to start with a screenshot.

Plugins (on display)

  • Tasks
  • Better Word Count
  • Iconizer
  • Task Progress Bar

Plugins (backend)

  • Templater
  • Omnisearch (Much better search capabilities than the default search)
  • Dataview

Organization

I started out with PARA found through listening to Building A Second Brain by Tiego Forte ( https://amzn.to/3Ma7fCT )

My Problems with PARA

No location for Daily Notes

After using PARA for a couple of months, I realised that there was no real way to store daily notes in a way that makes sense. So I ended up not using them as much as I would have liked.

No location for Article Downloads

Information vanish, and in order to make sure I still have the solution to that problem I fixed, or the intermediary steps of research, I make sure to mirror any online resource I find. This means I keep both the source URI and the article. For this I use the MarkDownload-extension for Firefox. These resources when initially downloaded are contained as a directory with the resource pictures, and "resource title.md"

Vault Tour Inspiration

After watching https://youtu.be/rAkerV8rlow I was inspired to make changes to my vault. CyanVoxel inspired me to prettify my vault, as well as adding the "Permanent", "Fleeting", and "Daily Notes" directories.

This solved my two problems with PARA, I now have directories for article downloads (Fleeting), and Daily Notes.

I could merge Fleeting, and Daily Notes I suppose. I also listened to "Getting Things Done: The Art of Stress-Free Productivity" by David Allen ( https://amzn.to/4cyXadJ ) and Added that.

In rewatching CyanVoxel's video, I'm considering also adding more of his CSS snippets.

Configuration

There are some configuration options I have enabled in order for my Obsidian to display notes the way it does (stacked).

Here's an example of the tabbed interface that's Obsidian's default currently. In order to change to tabbed, you need to click the arrow at the top right of the interface.

Hit that, and you'll have a menu expand where you are able to select "Stack Tabs"

This Stacks the tabs (moves the tiltles, close, etc to the side of the tab)

Opening multiple tabs like this is done by CTRL+Click, you can then scroll the tabs using SHIFT+Scroll wheel.

That's about it for this time. Good luck!
